Stop Making Right Decisions, Make Decisions Right
Dec 23, 2024The decision-making process is often overcomplicated and varies dramatically from person to person. Some embrace spontaneity, while others find themselves paralyzed by endless analysis. Many of us have experienced that familiar pattern: researching a major purchase until we're overwhelmed with information, or endlessly weighing the pros and cons of a career move.
At the heart of this struggle lies our reliance on prediction. We get caught in an endless loop of trying to forecast various outcomes, searching for certainty in an uncertain world. We look to the external world to validate our choices, hoping to find proof that we're making the "right decision." But this is an illusion – the future cannot be validated before it unfolds.
There's a better approach: aligning our decisions with what I call our "Reason Why" – our aspirational identity, the person we want to become. While this doesn't guarantee specific outcomes, it provides a more meaningful framework for decision-making. Instead of trying to predict the unpredictable, we can simply ask ourselves: "Does this choice align with who I want to be?"
The key distinction lies in our approach: rather than trying to make the "right" decision through prediction, we can make a decision and then make it right through our commitment and alignment with our core values. Once we choose, our Reason Why becomes our compass, helping us navigate the path forward. It guides us in determining whether to persist or pivot to a new direction.
This shift in perspective – from seeking external validation to trusting internal alignment – transforms the entire decision-making process. It frees us from the paralysis of prediction and empowers us to take meaningful risks that resonate with our deeper purpose. When we make decisions this way, we move from asking "What if?" to declaring "This is my choice, now."
